I’m going to be. It’s my mission.
I’m not some backward hill billy DBA. I have personality and smarts. I have experience and most importantly I don’t hate Microsoft. Seriously guys, this is a big deal. I have met so many self-professed Microsoft advocates who swear under their breath when ever General Exception rolls in on his big blue tank – it’s not funny. Plus I was an Oracle brainwashed (sorry Larry but the drugs wore off now) addict. Everything was Oracle this, Oracle that. I mean if Oracle had made hamburgers, I wouldn’t have eaten anything else.
Let me just say though, it’s horses for courses – and SO MANY DBA’S SOUND SO STUPID when they say: ‘Oracle is a REAL database’ or ‘Microsoft SQL Server is Access on steriods’. Seriously guys – SQL Server 2008 is a fantastic product, and more than competes with Oracle’s offerings.
Uh oh, now I’m sounding like Bill and Steve put something in my coffee. Ahem. Back to my point, horses for courses. Well Oracle and Microsoft both make GREAT products, and there’ll be times I recommend to clients to pursue a Microsoft solution and other times an Oracle one.
So let’s all stop the fan boy stuff and hug… well not hug but focus on the means to the end… which is the right database technology for the right outcome.
Now stop shaking your head. Take a breath. Comment back.
